Cuni returns with Harbinger – an ambitious new EP that establishes the band as a rising voice in the DIY scene. Building on their debut LP Prescribed Burn, the record expands their collision of post-hardcore, emo, screamo, shoegaze, and metal with a newfound sense of weight and urgency.
Each track highlights a different corner of Cuni’s sound, moving between intricate emo melodies, crushing distortion, atmospheric passages, and chaotic bursts of post-hardcore. Fans of Tricot, My Chemical Romance, Touché Amoré, and Superheaven will all find something to latch onto across the record.
Thematically, Harbinger takes inspiration from the biblical Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, using each as an allegory for the societal ills plaguing the world. “Conquest” and “War” confront colonialism and genocide, “Famine” depicts climate change and a dying planet, and “Death” closes the cycle with a solemn, strangely peaceful resignation to a life spent forging your own path.
Harbinger was produced, engineered, and mixed by Ryland Heagy of Origami Angel, who brings clarity and polish to Cuni’s aggressive DIY foundation without sanding down its chaos. The record was mastered by Will Yip (Turnstile, Title Fight, Superheaven).
