Checkmate Honors Sister’s Memory on New EP 'LOVE OF A SISTER'

Checkmate’s new EP LOVE OF A SISTER is out now. The project is a raw and deeply personal tribute to loss, addiction, and the search for connection.

Written in the years following the death of the artist’s sister, Kelly Beitz – who passed away in 2021 due to an opioid overdose – the project captures the weight of grief and the difficulty of making sense of it.

Across the EP, Checkmate confronts the realities of loving someone through addiction and the lasting impact of that loss. Loud, urgent, and rooted in emo, the songs channel overwhelming emotions into something tangible – an outlet for processing what can’t be easily explained.

More than anything, LOVE OF A SISTER reaches outward. It speaks to the countless people facing similar experiences, offering a sense of shared understanding in moments that can feel isolating.
