Swiss Army Wife confronts the long shadow on “Cowboy”
Swiss Army Wife returns with “Cowboy," the second single from their upcoming album I Love You, But I Hate It Here. Following their cult-favorite debut Medium Gnarly – which drew comparisons to You Blew It! and Free Throw, and a nod from Anthony Fantano – the Portland band pushes into heavier, more volatile territory.
“Cowboy” finds the Swiss Army Wife at their most ferocious, pairing explosive, unraveling choruses with a harrowing look at the long arc of trauma. Tracing a parent’s shift from abuser to a frail body in hospice, the song refuses closure, sitting with the truth that damage lingers long after its source is gone. Anchored by the line “Telling yourself boys don’t cry / you’re gonna carry this the rest of your life,” it’s a searing portrait of cycles that repeat until something finally starts to give.
The track previews an album that widens the band’s scope without losing their intimacy – grappling with everything from gender dysphoria and medical debt to climate grief and collapsing hometowns. I Love You, But I Hate It Here is about loving something that’s falling apart – and still trying to call it home.
"Cowboy" is out now with I Love You, But I Hate It Here out on June 12.
